Aero & Auto Engineering Awards Ceremony
C
elebrated former Royal Navy officer and test pilot, Captain Eric Brown CBE, DSC, AFC, FRAeS, RN , was guest of honour at Northbrook’s Aero & Auto Engineering Awards Ceremony last week.
Captain Brown has flown more types of aircraft than anyone else in history and is the Fleet Air Arm’s most decorated pilot. He also holds the world record for aircraft carrier landings, 2407 to be exact. He has flown aircraft from Britain, America, Germany, Italy and Japan and is listed in the Guinness Book for World Records as holding the record for flying the greatest number of different aircraft.
He presented Northbrook’s students of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering with cups, shields and other trophies and, not surprisingly, delivered an inspiring speech to the audience. The keynote of Captain Brown’s enthusing speech to the students was that with their new qualifications and youth, they have the world at their feet and can achieve anything and everything.
Northbrook’s Aero and Auto awards are presented each year from the likes of Esso, British Aerospace and Olley Air Services. Many of the awards were first donated to the College in the 1930s, when the Shoreham Airport campus was the famous Chelsea College of Aeronautical and Automobile Engineering, and they have been presented to students every year since then. Sponsored awards included shields from Caffyns PLC, Buck & Hickman, Partco Ltd and Ricardo Consulting Engineers as well as an award from the Fleet Air Arm Association.
After the awards of excellence and the sponsored awards, students who had successfully completed their studies were presented with their certificates.
Due to the growth of the Engineering Department, the ceremony this year took place at the Charmandean Centre in Worthing. The packed out ceremony was attended by The Mayor, the Principal, Chair of the Governors, local councillors and businesses as well as the families and friends of the recipients.
