Motorsport Student Team Comes 2nd at Brands Hatch

The winning team T eam Northbrook Racing has beaten professional racing teams from around the country to come second in the Brands Hatch Formula 4 championship.

The Motorsport students took their Formula Renault car to the track, where they maintained the car, carried out the data analysis and oversaw the event for driver, Shane Kelly.

Despite the rain, Northbrook’s car battled to 2nd and was catching 1st (both drivers were alongside each other at some points). Unfortunately Shane could not pass safely so settled for a very close 2nd with only 3 tenths of a second between 1st and 2nd.

Driver, Shane Kelly, commented, “It’s a big achievement for the students. For that many students to be involved, it came together well and if felt like having a proper race team around you.”

The college team had qualified 5th and was initially in class D. After the race, Team Northbrook Racing (TNR) was upgraded to class A due to performance.

David Tucker, Course Leader of Northbrook’s Motorsport Engineering degree, said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those concerned in achieving something quite remarkable – a brilliant team effort!”

Northbrook’s Motorsport courses are based at the College’s specialist engineering campus at Shoreham Airport and they include the IMI National Diploma and the Foundation Degree, which is validated by the University of Brighton.
