Aircraft Mechanics - SEMTA Level 2 NVQ

Course Length: 1 Year Site: Shoreham Airport Map
Attendance: Full time Course Code: FALEMT1

The Course

The course is intended for school leavers wishing to gain employment in the aircraft engineering industry. It provides instruction in basic skills and practices, with associated theory to enable students to become competent mechanics in the aviation industry. It also forms the basis for suitable students to progress onto the licensed engineering training.

Course Content

The course is heavily biased towards practical skills, with theoretical sessions to provide underpinning knowledge.

Functional Skills subjects (Maths, Physics, English and IT to Level 2) will also be taught to enable the student to maintain the required standard.

You will study engineering fundamentals, mathematics, science, IT, aircraft fundamentals, aircraft systems, theory of flight, weight & balance, electrics, piston engines, propellers and air legislation. Apart from Functional Skills, most of the above will be learnt during practical sessions.

Students will make use of the College’s extensive workshop facilities to learn basic hand skills and work on the aircraft and components.

Assessment/Exams

Practical work and underpinning knowledge will be assessed by the College’s NVQ assessors and verifiers on an ongoing basis. These assessments will be externally verified. A portfolio will need to be raised and maintained throughout the course.

Progression/Career Path

To maintain aircraft requires properly trained, skilled personnel. Training continues throughout the student’s working life within the aircraft industry. The NVQ Level 2 course is the first rung of the ladder to becoming a professional licensed engineer.

This course allows suitable students to progress to:

  • EASA Part 66 Aircraft Mechanics Course (2 years)
  • C&G 2661 Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering
  • Join industry as an aircraft mechanic (trainee)
  • Join the armed services within their aeronautical areas
  • Apply to become an apprentice within the industry
The aircraft industry in this country, especially in the south of England, offers young people the opportunity to work in the many different areas associated with the manufacture and maintenance of aircraft.

Please note that for progression to Level 3, it will be necessary to successfully complete Functional Skills at Level 2 in Application of Number and Communications.
