About this Course

On this course you will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. Units have been chosen that interlink and are vocationally relevant, allowing you to develop a range of business skills.

BTEC Level 3 Nationals provide you with an up to date and relevant progression route to higher education, employment or higher apprenticeships. Recently redesigned in collaboration with employers and higher education providers, the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate and Extended Diploma offer you opportunities to build your research and extended writing skills, as well as the ability to meet deadlines and gain work-ready skills.

Entry Requirements

To start on this course you need:


At least 4 GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, preferably including English and maths
or
a relevant Level 2 qualification, including English and maths requirements.


(If you will not have the above qualifications, you may be able to start on the Level 2 course before applying to move on to this Level 3 course.)

Course Content

You will learn through practical activities, problem solving and realistic work place scenarios. You will be encouraged to develop effective research skills and to improve your writing skills. Assessment methods include presentations, reports and role plays in addition to external assessments for Unit 2 Developing a Marketing Campaign and Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance. The course will include group and individual work. In the first year, you will plan and organise a business event and in the second year you will explore potential ideas for a micro-business start-up, develop a business plan and carry out a pitch for funding for the chosen micro-business.


If you have not yet achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in English and/or Maths, you will also study English and/or Maths while at college.

Optional units will be selected to give you a broad based qualification suitable for progression to higher education, employment or a higher apprenticeship.


Work experience

Work experience and employability skills are an integral part of your programme of study and it is a requirement of your enrolment with the College to undertake an external work placement. The experience gained from your work placement will support your understanding of employer requirements and expectations within the industry.

Support

A college laptop will be loaned to each student for the duration of the course, with all necessary software installed. Students can access their work on the college network through the student portal.

Assessment/Exams

There is a combination of internal and external assessment. You will be thoroughly prepared for external assessment and will have the opportunity to take mock assessments to help you prepare. The scheme of work and assignment programme for each internally assessed unit is designed by specialist teaching staff and is based on Pearson’s unit specifications. You will have the opportunity to submit work at Distinction, Merit or Pass level and will have one resubmission opportunity for internally assessed work and one retake opportunity for externally assessed units.

Progression/Career Path

After 1 year you can achieve a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business. This means that you can apply for the Extended Diploma course.


After 2 years you can achieve a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business. This is equivalent to 3 A Levels and means you can either apply for university level courses or seek employment.

What Past Students Say

Students completing the qualification in the summer of 2015 have gone on to study Business and related degrees at universities, including Sussex, Brighton and Hertfordshire. Other students have entered employment in various functional areas of business, including retail management and accounting.
