This is a highly practical course in which you will learn about song writing techniques, producing/recording your own tracks and vital information on the music industry and working as a freelance. Central to the course is creating a professional image as a songwriter and developing your personal voice as well as versatility.

 

Entry Requirements

To start on this course you need:


At least 4 GCSEs at minimum grade C/4, preferably including English and maths
or
a relevant Level 2 qualification, including English and maths requirements.


Applicants are auditioned.


(If you will not have the above qualifications, you may be able to start on the Level 2 Performance/Technology course instead, before applying to move on to this Level 3 course).

Course Content

Study will include:


  • Contemporary songwriting techniques

  • Arrangement analysis and listening skills – analyse great songwriters of history

  • Studio production techniques, recording, producing

  • Professional development - receive regular feedback from industry professionals

  • Sound for the moving image – such as music for film

  • The sound and music industry.

  • Music theory and aural perception

  • Recording sessions - write and record in some of the best recording facilities in the country


If you have less that grade C/4 in GCSE English or Maths, you will also study that subject at college.

Progression/Career Path

After 1 year, you can achieve a UAL Diploma in Music Performance and Production. This means you can progress on to the Extended Diploma course (below).


After 2 years, you can achieve a UAL Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production. This is equivalent to 3 A Levels. This means you can apply for university level courses. Successful students can seek careers in Music Composition, Teaching, Performance, Engineering and Production.
