Entry Requirements

To start on this course you need:
4 GCSEs at grades A* to C (including English and Maths)
or a Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject.

Applicants are auditioned.

(Alternatively: Students with at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above (including English and Maths) could start on the Level 2 course instead, before applying to move on to this Level 3 course.)

The Course

A career as a professional musician can be demanding and exciting. These are highly practical courses, in which you will learn about performing, arranging, songwriting/composing and a wide range of different styles of music. Central to the courses is developing your instrumental or vocal skills and using these in live performance, studios and recording

Course Content

Study will include:

- Session styles: from disco to rock - R&B to heavy metal
- Instrument tuition - develop your technique and instrumental ability
- Gigging - regular performances in a range of settings
- Professional development - receive weekly feedback on your performances from industry professionals
- TV/radio and touring
- Music theory & sight reading
- Music arranging & composing
- Music technology - recording, producing, writing music for film
- Recording sessions - write and record in some of the best recording facilities in the country
- History of pop music and the music industry

Progression/Career Path

After 1 year at Level 3 you can achieve a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Music (Performing). The Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to 1 A Level. Some students will seek employment but most will apply for the Extended Diploma course (below)
OR
Students on the fast track mode can achieve a BTEC Diploma in Music. The Diploma is equivalent to 2 A Levels, meaning you could apply for university level courses or seek employment.

After 2 years at Level 3 you can achieve a BTEC Extended Diploma in Music. This is equivalent to 3 A Levels. This means you can apply for university level courses. Successful students can seek careers in Music Management, Teaching, Performance, Engineering and Production.
