Entry Requirements

To start on this course you need at least two GCSEs at grade 1 or above, preferably including English and maths, or an Entry Level qualification. You also need an appropriate reference and successful interview.


Additional Entry Criteria

All candidates must have a Disclosure and Baring Service Check (formally CRB). Two suitable references, one from current school tutor and the second from a childcare professional - i.e. work experience report. Some childcare experience is required.

Course Content

Learn about caring for children from birth to 7 years.


Units include:

  • Child development
  • Care of children
  • Play and practical activities
  • Health and wellbeing


Work placements are integral to the courses and close links with the community ensure students have access to work placements that offer the opportunity to link classroom theory to workplace practice. Learners enjoy the opportunity to gain ‘hands on’ experience.


Level 1 aims to offer learners a route to further qualifications through hard work and commitment.


All classes are supported by the use of the College’s virtual learning environment


Functional skills or GCSEs in English and Maths are part of the core programme of study. Students who have not achieved grade A*-C or 9-4 in English and Maths will be required to study the appropriate level as part of their main qualification. More information


Assessment/Exams

The assessment is by portfolio task

Progression/Career Path

After 1 year at Level 1 you can achieve a CACHE Level 1 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Caring for Children With satisfactory grades, tutor report and Level 1 Maths and English, you can apply for Level 2.
