This course is designed for the student who wishes to take part in a hands-on course.


Northbrook’s catering students train in the College’s restaurant, coffee shop and bar, which are all open to the public.

Entry Requirements

To start on this Level 2 course you need:

at least 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and maths, plus satisfactory catering knowledge
or
a relevant Level 1 qualification, including English and Maths requirements.


(If you do not have the above qualifications, you may be able to start on the Level 1 course instead. Click here for the Level 1 course

Course Content

You will be either working in our industrial kitchens with a trained chef lecturer developing an array of kitchen skills and techniques, or serving food produced in either our coffee shop or fine dining restaurant where you will develop food service skills as well as customer care, bar and cashiering experience.


You will also complete a one week work placement.


Visits to local hotels and restaurants, as well as other local catering establishments, will broaden your knowledge of the industry.


You will also have the opportunity to enter regional cookery competitions, cater for community events and work with celebrity chefs


GCSEs in English and Maths are part of the core programme of study. Students who have not achieved at least grade C/4 in English and Maths will be required to study the appropriate level as part of their main qualification. More information


Progression/Career Path

After 1 year at Level 2 you can achieve a NVQ in Professional Cookery Level 2 and a VRQ Level 2 in Food & Beverage Service. This means you can apply for Level 3 Professional Cookery - or the Level 3 Hospitality course with full achievement of appropriate Maths & English qualifications.

Assessment/Exams

Students will produce a portfolio of evidence which will include underpinning knowledge and a record of practical assessments in both the kitchen and restaurant.
