THE COURSE

This course enables students to explore the historical traditions of painting as well as the changes to contemporary manifestations of the visual language of painting as a result of mechanical and digital technologies.

Considerable interrelation exists between this and the other Fine Art pathways and in order to encourage a creative dialogue and cross fertilisation of ideas and methodologies, units of the course are delivered to groups of students with a range of specialisms.

The course is delivered by practising artists and writers who encourage students to develop an awareness of historical and contemporary fine art and to critically evaluate their work and that of their contemporaries.

Students are made aware of funding issues and professional practice and are encouraged to exhibit their work in public spaces . Following the Degree Show in the final year, students exhibit in London as part of Free Range. See www.free-range.org.uk for examples of student work.

If a student exits the BA (Hons) degree course at the end of the first level and has passed all the units, they will be awarded a University of Brighton Certificate in Higher Education in Fine Art (Painting).

If a student exits the BA (Hons) degree course at the end of the second level and has passed all the units, they will be awarded a University of Brighton Diploma in Higher Education in Fine Art (Painting) which is the equivalent level to a Foundation Degree.

COURSE CONTENT

Painting students are introduced to the traditional techniques and materials for the supports, grounds and mediums of their work and are encouraged to consider their own position within the contemporary discourse about painting. Through the practical exploration of these materials, students are supported in the development of their own studio practice as professional fine artists.

Students work in their own dedicated studio space as well as having access to the printmaking room, 3D workshop, installation/exhibiting spaces and the Fine Art, Fashion & Textiles and Media Arts Flexible Learning Areas. We offer students visits to national and international galleries and the opportunity to take part in the exchange programme with the USA.

PROGRESSION/CAREER

Recent fine art graduates have established careers as professional artists by exhibiting and selling their work through galleries and websites.

Students have also found employment in curating, gallery & museum work, teaching, lecturing, community arts, arts administration, public arts, art therapy, video and website production.

Others have progressed on to courses such as MA Fine Art, MA Art History, MA Curating and PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education).
