The Course

An exciting new course for gifted dancers who wish to explore and develop their skills base with a view to progressing to appropriate work in the dance industry or to further study. The course programme involves the study and practice of both traditional and innovative areas of dance performance. The course includes the in-depth study of jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, pas de deux and commercial techniques. The course allows for many performance opportunities at a range of venues, including performances at The Northbrook Theatre, as part of the Move It Company at Earls Court Olympia, London and other professional venues in Brighton and London.

Course Content

There are 10 units consisting of practical workshops developing students' technical skills and knowledge including:

Dance Techniques Classes
Ballet, tap, contemporary and jazz, all graded at five levels from basic to advanced. Contemporary techniques include: Graham, Cunningham, Limon, Release, Contact Improvisation and New dance. Classes in commercial dance, lyrical jazz, pas de deux, African and Capoeira

Movement Classes
Contact improvisation, acrobalance and physical theatre techniques

Body Maintenance
Body conditioning, pilates, Alexander technique, aerobics and yoga

Professional Technique Classes
Audition techniques, improvisation, choreography, devising, characterisation and performance skills. Advice on CVs, headshots and building professional contacts.

Contextual Studies
History of dance theatre, context of contemporary dance, contemporary performance, CV Development

Progression/Career

Students may enter the third year/BA top-up course at Northbrook or can apply to do the final year of their degree or one year post graduate training course elsewhere. For some students it is possible that they need no further training and can enter the industry to audition for agents/productions or create their own performance work.
