Graduate Fashion Week 2008
F
inal year students from the BA (Hons) Fashion Design course at Northbrook College Sussex showcased their womenswear and menswear collections during a catwalk show at Graduate Fashion Week at Earls Court, London.
The annual event kicked off with 48 of the top fashion and textile universities and colleges in the UK attending to display their designs in a series of static exhibitions and catwalk shows.
Northbrook catwalk show impressed a packed-out audience of fashion industry VIPs such as Claudia Schiffer, Julien MacDonald and River Island, as well as international press and the friends and families of the students.
Collections from the students certainly got the most prestigious of critics talking.
Louise Simmonds’ final collection attracted much attention from industry professionals, including Vogue.com, who praised her designs for drawing on the drama of the Italian renaissance. Louise’s innovative collection saw her entered as one of the finalists for the SDC Colour and Textiles Award.
Sophi Small, who has already secured a prestigious design position with Abercombie and Fitch in the US, was shortlisted for the River Island Gold Award for Outstanding Talent, which was attended and judged by Claudia Schiffer.
All ten students really injected a fusion of originality into their designs and drew from a wide range of cultures, heritages and eras.
Rebecca Reeves looked to the role of women during World War 2 for her collection of forties tea dresses and jackets. Andrew McCormack’s striking menswear collection was inspired by influences from further afield with his leather bomber jackets and mohair tops based upon the Celtic influences of Scottish Heritage combined with masai warriors.
Every year Northbrook College stages a catwalk show to great acclaim and impresses the audience with their collections.
Each year, their second year students have successfully gained work placements at Giles Deacon, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Burberry Prorsum, Richard Nicoll, PPQ, Duffer St George, Ozwald Boateng, New Look, TopMan, TopShop, Whistles, Ghost, Michiko Koshino and more.
