Award Winning Illustrator Visits

Award winning author, illustrator and political cartoonist Chris Riddell, thrilled Northbrook Art & Design students with a visit to the College.

Chris, who lives in Brighton, is an acclaimed political cartoonist for The Observer newspaper, producing lively caricatures of politicians from John Chris Riddell with students Major to Gordon Brown, Bill Clinton to George Bush.

He has also written and illustrated a range of beautiful, wildly inventive and funny children’s books, including The Emperor of Absurdia, the Ottoline series and The Edge Chronicles . He has garnered many book awards, and is seven times winner of the coveted Kate Greenaway medal, awarded for outstanding illustrated books for children and young people.

Chris talked to the students about his creative process, from initial sketch to finished piece, sharing some of the illustrations which have earned his reputation as a fine draughtsman.

Chris told the students, “It’s important to find your own stories, be proactive and generate your own work, rather than waiting for someone to commission you.”

He then gave the lucky Illustration and Communication Design degree students the privilege of looking through his original sketchbooks and manuscripts.
