Girl Power

R obyn Baker, a 14–16 student on a Young Apprenticeship at Northbrook College, has become the only female this year to achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Fitting. Robyn, currently a student at Davison High School, has been attending the course at the College for the last two years whilst studying at the girls’ school.

Robyn completed the course alongside seven male students making her one of only two girls in the Worthing area to complete this programme. The first female student, Ellen Karmios, who completed last year, is now studying on the Level 3 Automotive/Motorsport course at Northbrook.

At present, Northbrook has approximately 370 students on its 14–16, Young Apprenticeship, Increased Flexibility and Diploma programmes in a variety of subject areas including Automotive Engineering. School students can attend the College one day a week during their last two years at school to gain a work-related qualification. The Young Apprenticeship also includes 50 days’ work experience in a garage as part of the qualification.

The College hopes to extend its provision with the further introduction of work-related Diplomas in Engineering, Hair & Beauty Studies and Construction & the Built Environment in 2009.
