School Students on the Catwalk
H
airdressing students staged a catwalk show at Northbrook’s new Hair & Beauty Training Academy in Shoreham. The GCSE students from local schools attend the College once a week as part of their studies. They were set a style project to find a particular ‘hair-up’ style they wanted to display in the show.
The students were asked to choose an era of their choice and revamp a hair style using books, magazines and the internet for inspiration. They then had to create the look on family members and friends who modeled for them on the catwalk.
Prizes for the top three winners were donated by Salon Supplies in Rustington and all participants received L’Oreal products.
The judging panel consisted of Hairdressing tutor, Thisbe Neame, other tutors at the College and an External Verifier who all said, “Choosing the winners was incredibly hard as the standard of the student work was very high”.
The first prize went to 14-year-old Shelbie Hunt whose rendition of wedding hair using pearls and white blossom was loved by the judges. A sixties look won Sammie Chard, 15, second prize in the competition. Bethany Blinch was awarded third prize for her take on the Medieval period which saw her model transformed into Maid Marian. The inventive hair do, composed of plaits woven with ivy, made it look as though she had just stepped out of Sherwood Forest. Other students experimented with rollers, hair buns and backcombing techniques.
The Increased Flexibility (IF) programme allows school students to attend the College one day a week during their last two years at school to gain a work-related qualification. The programmes are offered in Hairdressing/Beauty Therapy, Construction, Catering, Performing Engineering Operations, Childcare, Car Mechanics and Music.
