raftsman of the Year
Ross Spark, a Level 3 Furniture Making student, won ‘The Young Craftsman of the Year’ award at the South of England Show this weekend.
Ross, who is 18 and in his 2nd year at the College, produced a stunning six drawer, Art Deco style cabinet. This very complicated piece was beautifully executed with the expert guidance and support of his tutor, Martin Howlett and tutor and senior technician, Sam Penney, himself a previous winner of the prize, together with Seth Evans Joinery.
Ross’s prize, presented to him by the Duke of Norfolk, consisted of £1200, a beautiful glass trophy and the opportunity to have the use of a fully equipped workshop and business support free for a year.
Tony Bates, the Course Leader for Furniture Making, said ‘This is an outstanding achievement and Ross and the teaching team have worked extremely hard with superb results’.
F lower Show Prizes
The Show also proved a massive success for Northbrook’s Floristry Department with some notable prize winners this year.
Twelve floristry students from Worthing, both NVQ level 2 and 3, entered displays into the competition and impressively walked away with an array of prizes and highly commended.
Floristry tutor, Ann Ayre, set a fine example to her students by winning first prize for her pedestal arrangement and coming second in both the ‘Art Nouveau’ and ‘The mask’ category, which required entrants to creatively create a scarecrow mask using only natural materials. Ann’s winning display was praised by the judges who described her pedestal as ‘An accomplished natural pedestal with a wealth of gifts of the earth, plants, clay and wood’.
Student winners include Debra Gould who won 2nd prize in the ‘On the farm’ category, Eileen Staples won 2nd prize for her arrangement in ‘Home-grown’ and Diane Stephenson scoped 3rd prize for her pedestal.
