The Course

The courses consist of 10 units delivered over two years. Initially, students start with a general introduction to all areas of theatre production and planning. Then, in the spring term, they follow their chosen Foundation Degree and apply skills practically on productions. The first year will see students take supportive roles on shows and work on approximately 10-15 productions both in the Northbrook Theatre and Brighton venues. Progressing to the 2nd year, students will then take senior production and design positions. Ultimately, they will lead a team and facilitate the requirements of assorted events and productions, working within their own specialised degree area and also alongside those students following other production and performance degrees.

Course Content

Students cover all aspects of stage and production management. The roles and responsibilities of the SM dept - making up a book, propping, props acquisition, petty cash, budgets, rehearsal calls, rehearsal notes, schedules, mark-outs, score reading - musical theatre, opera and ballet, calling a show, working with comms and cue lights, running a technical rehearsal, prop making.

Production Management students will work with: budgets, orders, schedules, risk assessments and H&S. They will chair production meetings and run the production period. Practical work will include flying - hemp & counterweight, loading, knots, workshop machinery, stage equipment, set building, working with designers, carpentry, fit-ups, strikes and get outs. All students will practise essential skills of communication, working with a team, heading a department and man management.

Progression/Career

Progression to BA (Hons) Theatre Arts, (top-up) is offered subject to passing the course. Progression to industry across all foundation production courses has included employers such as Brighton Fringe Festival, "Wicked" West End, The Pavilion Theatre Brighton, Chichester Festival Theatre, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Stage Electrics, High School Musical (tour), Lord of the Dance (tour), Worthing Theatres & Edinburgh Festival.
