Student Conference
N
orthbrook held its first Student Conference titled ‘Have your say’ at Brighton University to give students the chance to voice their opinions on the College.
The conference, which is due to become an annual event, is part of the Government’s new scheme, the Learner Voice.
The event was attended by both HE and FE students from a range of courses. Student representatives were nominated or chosen by class members to attend the conference and voice the views of the whole group.
In the morning session students were encouraged by the Principal, David Percival and Director of Curriculum, Paul Norman to voice all their opinions and concerns. Students expressed they would like more contact with their student reps, that they would like a student radio and reiterated the continuing need for improved buildings and facilities.
After lunch, the topic for the second part of session was ‘How can we ensure you get your say’ and addressed how the College can make changes. Suggestions included that the student reps should be more accessible and a noticeboard should be put up displaying their photos and committee meeting updates so that other students know who their reps are and what they have been discussing. Students requested more enrichment activities, suggestion boxes and plasma screens in the canteen.
Northbrook is currently setting up an internet student radio station which will air after the summer and the proposed new build will address many of the issues concerning the facilities.
