COURSE OVERVIEW
Sewing soft furnishings for the home is one of the most meaningful and expressive ways to add your personality and style into your home. Producing items for the home yourself, gives you the freedom to choose colours, fabrics and design features in limitless combinations that are not readily available.
This course is suitable for complete beginners to sewing or those with sewing experience who want to learn how to make professional hand sewn roman blinds.
Students will learn how to make two sample sized roman blinds;
Blind 1 -; lined, no visible stitching, integrated rod pockets, hand sewn rings.
Blind 2 -; interlined, lined, no visible stitching, integrated rod pockets, faux hem & pom-pom trim, hand sewn rings.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• Measure a window correctly
• Estimate fabric and make accurate calculations for rod pocket spacing for standard fold roman blinds.
• Use a sewing machine
• Join fabrics
• Demonstrate various hand sewing stitches & techniques to create perfect invisible stitching.
• Interline
• Create faux hems & add trims.
• Cover compliance regulations to ensure safe installations.
You will need a sewing kit including -; dress making scissors, tape measure, pins, selection of hand sewing needles, fabric marking pen or tailor’;s chalk.
For your first session please bring 1 meter of top fabric (curtain weight), a spool of matching thread.
This course runs on a Monday daytime 09:30-16:30.
Tutor Cherie Newnham originally studied fashion at the University of Westminster, gaining a BA (HONS) degree. Her love of interiors started when she worked at Liberty’;s in London. She went on to gain her qualification in both modern and traditional upholstery and was awarded the ‘Medal for Excellence’; for her work by City & Guilds.

there is no formal assessment
Upholstery materials are included in the price.
You are required to supply your item to be upholstered, top fabric & trims of your choice. You will be required to purchase & use your own pair of safety boots/trainers for use in our workshop.
