Northbrook students cook up a storm to celebrate Burns Night

6 February 2025

The Arundel Restaurant filled with people enjoying their mealsNorthbrook College welcomed staff, students, and members of the public for this year’s Burns Night celebrations.

Burns Night is an evening set aside for Scottish traditions, specifically to celebrate the renowned poet Robert Burns with a classic combination of Scottish food and drink.

The event, which took place last month in the Arundel Restaurant, saw authentic Scottish dishes served by the college’s hospitality and catering students.

Guests were treated to a four-course meal which included creamed roast celery and pea soup, haggis, neeps and tatties, and braised Highland lamb chump chop with rumbledthumps. And to finish, a classic cranachan.

One of the highlights of the evening was the piping in of the haggis, which marks the arrival of the Scottish staple, accompanied by bagpipe music played by a local professional piper.

The evening finished with the tables being cleared people partaking in some traditional ceilidh dancing.

Steve Cannell, Deputy Head of Learning for Hospitality & Catering, said:
“Burns Night is the annual red-letter day event for Hospitality and Catering students at Northbrook College.

“The specialist menu, pipping in of the Haggis and traditional Scottish dancing add theatre to the occasion which many students will not have previously experienced.

“The pride and joy on the student’s face when being collectively presented to the 90 plus guests and receiving public recognition, adulation, and applause for their hard work, commitment, and professionalism affords a very positive and lasting memory.”
