Entry Requirements

To start on this course you need:



At least 4 GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, preferably including English and maths, and evidence of your art/design work.
or
a relevant Level 2 qualification, including English and Maths requirements.


You will be asked to show a portfolio of your art/design work at interview.

Students with grade D / 3 in GCSE English and an art or design subject may be able to start by doing a year on the Level 2 Art & Design course instead, before applying to move on to this Level 3 course. Click here for Level 2 Art & Design course.)

Course Content

In Year One, there is a broad based introduction to graphic design and illustration, together with transferable skill acquisition. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of materials, working methods and processes exploring the specialist areas of:

  • Advertising
  • Packaging
  • Illustration
  • Corporate identity
  • Magazine and book design
  • Character design
  • Publicity
  • Typography
  • Computer games visual design


During the second year, students begin to focus on areas of particular interest and are encouraged to work with increasing independence of mind.


The programme is supported by cultural & historical lectures, museum visits and study trips. The course is delivered through practical studio based activity, together with research into contemporary and historical design practice. If you have less than grade C / 4 in GCSE English or Maths, you will also study that subject at college (more information). This course will help you to fulfil your creative potential in a friendly and supportive environment.

Progression/Career Path

After 1 year you can achieve a University of the Arts London Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design). This means you can progress to the Extended Diploma course (below).


After 2 years you can achieve a University of the Arts London Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design) This is equivalent to 3 A Levels. This means you can apply for university level courses. Alternatively you could seek employment.
