Beginners Curtain & Cushion Making Course – Soft Furnishings

COURSE OVERVIEW

Sewing soft furnishings for the home is one of the most meaningful and expressive ways to add your personality and style into your home. Producing items for the home yourself gives you the freedom to choose colours, fabrics, and design features in limitless combinations that are not readily available.

Come and join our fun and hands-on beginner’;s curtain & cushion making class. This is the perfect introduction for anyone wanting to have a go at making their own curtains & cushions. This course is suitable for complete beginners to sewing or those with sewing experience.

Students will learn how to make:

A sample sized lined pencil pleat curtain with heading tape & cord tidy.

A piped cushion with concealed zip.

A piped crescent curtain tie-back.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Measure and cut fabric correctly

• Use a sewing machine

• Apply different hand stitches

• Create hems & headings

• Discuss fullness guides

• Create a neat cord tidy

• Create mitered corners and add weights

• Insert a concealed zip

• Create and apply piping

You will need a sewing kit including -; dress making scissors, tape measure, pins, selection of hand sewing needles, fabric marking pen or tailors chalk.

For your first session please bring 1.5 meters of top fabric (curtain weight) and a spool of matching thread.

This course runs on a Monday daytime 09:30-16:30.

Tutor Cherie Newnham originally studied fashion at the University of Westminster, gaining a BA (HONS) degree. Her love of interiors started when she worked at Liberty’;s in London. She went on to gain her qualification in both modern and traditional upholstery and was awarded the ‘Medal for Excellence’; for her work by City & Guilds.
