Case study: Elijah – Level 3 Music (Fast-track), BA (Hons) Music Production

1 February 2023

After completing his Level 3 Music course, Elijah went on to study for a music production degree. Since graduating, he has been supported by BBC Music Introducing: The South, and is hoping to release 20 original songs in 2022. We recently caught up with Elijah to find out more.

The right choice

“I was looking to refocus on my true passions after a tumultuous attempt at A-Levels for further education. Choosing to study music seemed like the way to shift my path towards happiness and fulfilment, and a way to surround myself with a peer group that wanted the same for themselves.

“Studying at Northbrook College was a brilliant decision – I took the opportunity to create a platform for myself via the student radio station and made friends with fellow creators to test my mettle and learn what I was capable of. I was able to launch numerous radio shows on radio stations in Brighton, thanks to the work I created at Northbrook College, and began teaching and DJing professionally thanks to connections I made through the College. Surrounding yourself with like-hearted people is a true asset to your success.”

Inspiring lecturers

“My tutors were brilliant and inspiring – I continue to admire them now, following my graduation, as I see them achieving in their own professional music careers. The studio facilities and music technicians at Northbrook College are second to none in my opinion, and the skills I developed during my tenure as a student there have laid a foundation on which I continue to build today.

“I studied two consecutive music courses at Northbrook College and created a collection of records for each – my debut artistic release Olive Boy was born from the Final Major Project of my Fast Track Diploma in 2016 while my sophomore release was my 3rd year degree project, Starlord, in 2019. I threw release parties for both of these and it was a joy to see so many faces from my course and time at Northbrook in attendance.”

The future looks bright

“For 2022, I’m releasing 20 songs and throwing three release parties throughout the year. I’ll be working with my session band to bring a unique performance to each event and coordinating with local promoters, QM Records, to make sure every party is memorable and extraordinary. BBC Music Introducing: The South have been showing us some brilliant support over the last two years; tune in to their radio show and you may catch one of my records playing live on the air!”

Final thoughts

“Think carefully about your vision for your future first – how do you want to look back on your time studying? Think carefully about your goals going forward from education – how much do you want to achieve and how will this look when you’re done? Put yourself in a position of strength with the course that you choose to study and believe in yourself when times get tough – you choose your path and you’re making the right decision.

“A massive thanks to all the staff, tutors and technicians that make Northbrook College a brilliant place to learn and grow. A warm embrace to all the students that fill the halls with curiosity and eagerness!”
