Styling success! Northbrook students showcase Hair Through Time at end of year show

25 June 2024

Northbrook College went on a journey through time, thanks to the fantastic talents of all the hair and make-up students.

Students, staff, friends and family came together for the college’s annual Hair Show with students creating looks ‘through the decades’.

Each year group was tasked with creating and styling looks inspired by a different decade:

  • Level 3 Hairdressing: 1960s
  • Level 2 Hairdressing 1970s and 1980s
  • Level 1 Hair & Beauty: 1990s

Students have been working on the project since February. They began by researching the fashion, music and trends of the era, creating mood boards and creative portfolios, before planning their looks.

They used a range of hairdressing and make-up techniques to create a wide variety of complex hairstyles.
Helen Curtis, Head of Learning at Northbrook College, said: “Our students have worked tremendously hard on this project.
“From inspiration and concept, to bringing their ideas to life on the runway. Tonight was a real showcase of their technical skills and journey.”
Each student was paired with a model, who walked the runway showing off the hairstyle, clothing and accessories themed from the era.
Winners for each category were judged by Northbrook staff and students:

  • 1960s: Ruby Morgan (Level 3 Hairdressing)
  • 1970s: Katie Sones (Level 2 Hairdressing)
  • 1980s: Molly Hyde (Level 2 Hairdressing)
  • 1990s: Serina Lean (Level 1 Hairdressing)

Katie said: “I’m quite shocked that I was one of the winning looks! I did a lot of research and planning, so I’m pleased the judges liked my work.”
Molly added: “I got most of my inspiration from my mum. I’m proud of myself for winning and want to say a big thank you to my tutors.”
The evening was a fantastic showcase of talent, and Northbrook College Principal Helena Thomas was quick to pay tribute to the achievements. She revealed: “It’s been a fantastic atmosphere this evening, with friends and family coming out to support our talented students.
“This event has been a team effort, between staff, students and our wonderful local Broadwater community.”
