The Week is organised by the Brighton Fashion Collective and features a series of events, which aim to showcase creativity and creative action by highlighting sustainable alternatives to fast fashion.
Fast fashion is a business model that prioritises rapidly designed and produced a low cost, that imitates current trends. Whereas slow fashion promotes sustainability through buying fewer, high-quality and ethically made garments that last longer.
The week kicked off with an official launch party, held at Stanley Road Store in Brighton, which saw students hold a fashion runway to show a variety of ethical designs to the audience.
It all then culminated in a closing flagship day, held at the Brighton Dome, where fashion students had the fabulous opportunity to showcase their pieces further, as they took part in their very own show, titled ‘The Future Talent Runway’.
Students from Brighton MET College also played a key role in the week, with creative industries students showcasing their work at both events as well.
The event, formerly called Sustainable Fashion Week, is backed by two local, non-profit organisations: Brighton Peace & Environment Centre, a local environmental charity, and Sew Fabulous, an ethical sewing and textiles studio.
Gayle Atkins, BA Fashion Programme Leader in Creative Industries at Northbrook College, and one of the spearheads behind the project, said:
“Northbrook BA Fashion students and alumni did us proud at Slow Fashion Week with two fantastic runways highlighting bespoke outfits and final collections. The response was outstanding.
“Brighton Fashion Collective were really impressed with the professionalism and creativity our designers brought to the event.”
