Action-Packed Academic Year for Future You Students at Northbrook College

9 July 2026

Northbrook College’s Future You students have enjoyed an action-packed year of enrichment activities, community projects and educational visits.

The Future You study programme is a course designed for young people aged 16 and older who have been out of education and may find a mainstream environment challenging due to potential emotional, behavioural, and social difficulties.

The course provides a supportive setting where students can rebuild confidence, develop independence and work towards their future ambitions.

Alongside their vocational and personal development studies, students dedicate time each day to improving their English and maths skills, helping them work towards achieving or retaking their GCSE qualifications.

Throughout the year, students complete nine different modules covering topics such as community, healthy living and personal development. These modules included practical projects, allowing students to apply their learning in different scenarios.

As part of the community module, students worked with local homelessness charity Turning Tides on their ‘Elephant in the Room’ campaign, which aimed to challenge public perceptions and raise awareness of homelessness across the local area.

To support the campaign, students designed a collage of an elephant and then photographed it around Worthing in places a homeless person might be.

Another key module focused on healthy living, encouraging students to improve their wellbeing, try new experiences and spend time outdoors.

To support this, students took part in Forest Schools with the Sussex Wildlife Trust, an outdoor learning program that takes place in local woodlands and green spaces.

During these visits, students were given the opportunity to make mallets out of chunks of wood, learn how to put up a hammock and how to build fires.

As part of the year, students visited campuses across the Chichester College Group, including Northbrook College’s Shoreham Airport Campus, Brinsbury College and Brighton MET College, to explore future study options.

Coco Swanson, the lecturer on the Future You Course, said:
“I’m just so proud of them all, because you see them now walking around and engaging with people and being excited about their next steps. I just think they are all amazing.
