Northbrook College hosted its annual end-of-year Creative Industries Summer show, displaying a wide variety of student creativity.

The show, which took place at the West Durrington campus, was designed to highlight the wide range of creative courses on offer at the college, from art & design to musical theatre.

At the event, family, friends, and members of the public had the opportunity to enjoy musical performances by college students, a fashion catwalk featuring designs by fashion students, and an array of student work exhibited throughout the campus.

The evening ended with an awards ceremony, during which several certificates were handed out for ‘best in show’ pieces, which were voted for by staff.

One of the winners on the night was Nathan Cooper, a second-year BA Illustration student, who was awarded ‘Best in Show’ for Higher Education (HE). He said:

“I knew I had won the minute she said ‘coloured pencils’, because I’m the only one that has done that. It was really exciting, I’ve never seen this many people the college before, so it was a little daunting to walk out in front of everybody, but it was really cool.

Nathan Cooper stood with Principal Helena Thomas, CCG Chief Executive Andy Green, and Worthing Mayor Cllr Cathy Glynn-Davies

“My partner took both of those photos, I have been to those places, and it’s all my lived experiences that I’ve drawn upon. I’ve just picked up skiing, and I just found that the area was so beautiful, but all the shops in the area had such terrible art designs and posters that you could buy, and I just thought they were really missing the natural beauty of this place.

“I try and pick things that are important to me or other people, it’s a place that my boyfriend has been going to since he was very young, and I just wanted to draw something for him basically…and that’s how I came up with the alpine posters.”

Also in attendance on the evening was Cllr Cathy Glynn-Davies, the Mayor of Worthing, she said:

“It’s been very exciting, and I was really impressed by the wealth of talent that’s on display. I think that many people in our community don’t appreciate what Northbrook College is doing here for not just young people, but mature students in our community as well.

“The fashion show was fantastic. It was really lovely to be outdoors with these splendid displays, watching a parade of young people dressed up in some really expressive and amazing outfits.

“I think what we’re seeing here at Northbrook compares really favourably with the arts that are on show at places. I’ve been to exhibitions and end of year shows at Gloucester, at Cambridge, and many times to shows in London, and I think Northbrook’s is up there, the standard is as high as all of those places, and we’ve got it right on our doorstep in Worthing.”
