Northbrook College students sew their sustainability at charity exhibition

12 March 2026

Fashion and textiles students have been collaborating with the inspiring charity, Link to Hope, to raise awareness about fast fashion and clothing recycling.

Students were tasked with creating a range of bespoke garments and homeware, using a collection of unwanted rags donated to the charity.

To achieve this, students undertook a range of print and fabric techniques and manipulations, including pattern cutting, construction, and visual communication.

This gave them the opportunity to work with fabrics they would not normally use before, gaining valuable experience and helping broaden their skill sets.

Each student approached the project differently, leading to a range of products and techniques, including applied appliqué (decorative needlework), a bodysuit, and an Arctic Sea themed outfit.

Carolyn Harrison, lecturer in Art & Design at Northbrook College, and the driving force behind this project, said:

“The collaboration between Link to Hope and the students has been such a challenging, innovative and rewarding one.

“Our students tackled the brief in a very professional manner, showing great creativity, passion, awareness and ambition to push themselves into creating magnificent pieces of work, culminating in staging a photoshoot in order to showcase their creations.

“I’m extremely impressed by the student’s response to this project and what they have managed to achieve.”

The designs are on display at the Link to Hope Charity Shop on Chapel Road, in Worthing town centre, until 20 March.
